Morocco and the world
Is Morocco warming faster than the world? Annual temperature anomalies relative to 1991–2020 for Morocco, Mediterranean rim cities and the global average.

Pace of warming
Annual temperature anomaly
The global average includes the oceans, which cover about 70% of the Earth and warm more slowly than land: a country such as Morocco therefore usually warms faster than the global average. The IPCC and the MedECC expert network identify the Mediterranean basin as a climate change hotspot.
The last 36 months
Morocco's monthly anomaly varies much more than the global average: an average over a small area reflects each month's weather, whereas the global average smooths it out.
Sources and method
- Morocco : average of the twelve regional points, Open-Meteo archive (ERA5).
- Mediterranean rim : average of 12 coastal cities (Málaga, Valencia, Marseille, Rome, Palermo, Athens, Izmir, Beirut, Alexandria, Tripoli, Tunis, Algiers), Open-Meteo archive (ERA5).
- World : daily global mean 2 m air temperature (ERA5), published by Copernicus Climate Pulse.
- Anomaly computed daily against the 1991–2020 mean for the same day, then aggregated by month and year. Trend: regression line over complete years since 1991. Regional points and cities are not area averages: the comparison remains indicative.
